1. Wet your hair before getting in the pool! Similar to a sponge, your hair has a maximum capacity of how much liquid it can hold. For example, a dry sponge will absorb more water than a wet sponge. This idea is true for hair as well; wet hair will not hold as much water as dry hair and in turn, absorb less chlorine and other chemicals/minerals.
2. Rinse your hair when you get out of the pool. When you get out of the water, rinse off your hair as soon as possible so your hair does not dry with chlorine and other minerals sitting on it.
3. Apply a leave-in conditioner after soaking your hair in water before getting in the pool. This is especially ideal for platinum blonde clients or those with extensions. The leave-in creates a barrier that prevents the chemicals in the pool or salt in the water from absorbing into your strands.
4. Wear a swim cap! While this may not feel like the cutest option (depending on your swim cap), a cap is ideal if you swim for exercise and find yourself in the pool often. Don’t forget to get your hair wet before putting on the cap!
5. Use gentle cleansing and hydrating products! Chlorine can cause your hair to not only feel dehydrated but also appear dry and dull. Using gentle-cleansing shampoos and hydrating conditioners is a great way to combat the drying effects of chlorine. For frequent swimmers, use a weekly detoxifying treatment will help avoid build up and keep your hair healthy. We recommend R&Co Teacup detox rinse, or a malibu swimmers treatment.
6. Add a chlorine-treatment to your regular appointments with your stylist. Ideal for frequent swimmers, the treatment removes chlorine, mineral, and salt build up while restoring shine and reducing tangles that can result from frequent visits to the pool or natural bodies of water.
