Common Hair Myths

MYTH #1: Plucking one grey hair will cause two grey hairs to grow in its place

TRUTH: This was most likely started by a hairstylist who was tired of their guests pulling out grey hairs.  All that happens is the new hair that grows in will be very short and will stick up while it’s growing.

MYTH #2: Skipping haircuts will help your hair grow longer and faster.

TRUTH: Keeping your ends trimmed prevents split ends and breakage.  Long hair isn’t the same as healthy long hair.  If you are growing out your hair you can wait longer in between haircuts, but we recommend no longer than 10 weeks.

MYTH #3: Coconut oil is a great replacement for deep conditioner treatment

TRUTH: While coconut oil is high in fatty acids which can be beneficial for hair, deep conditioners are different from coconut oil in how they work. After shampooing, the hair follicles are open. Deep conditioners provide penetrating treatments depending on your need and then close the hair follicles back up to retain that hydration and prevent breakage. Unless it is part of your cultural practice, there are other products that provide more benefits and are more targeted toward your individual needs.

MYTH #4: Shampooing less often is better for your hair.

TRUTH: This depends on your hair and scalp, and it is different for everyone!  If your hair is chemically damaged, then shampooing less often is healthy because you are agitating the hair less.  If your hair is naturally oily, or tends to feel flat after a couple of days, then you want to shampoo more often.  Talk to your stylist about your hair routine and make sure your scalp is healthy so the hair can properly grow.  The best amount of time between washes is the amount that allows you to have a healthy, happy scalp.

MYTH #5: Air drying is automatically healthier for your hair.

TRUTH: Blow drying isn’t bad for your hair as long as you are using proper heat protectant products and have proper technique. What is bad for your hair is blow drying against the grain of the hair.  This causes dryness and damage.  Air drying can lead to scalp irritation if your hair is very dense and the water just sits on it for hours.  Talk to your stylist about good blow drying techniques that work for your lifestyle.  And always use a product when blowdrying as it provides heat protection from the dryer.
